As you can see, we have arrived at the end of this article. This means by now we have briefly presented six robust and free open source firewall suites. Ultimately it is up to you to decide which one you’ll use. Most of these are also able to do some basic routing capabilities and act as a replacement for some commercial software or networking hardware. Lots of businesses migrate to open source and save money!

Generally when it comes to open source alternatives to commercial application suites, one of the most important criteria is whether customer service gets replaced by an active community. This is something that should not be neglected. You are free to explore whether these firewalls have communities that are sufficiently active.

In the case of commercial software, when you run into problems you just pick up the phone and ask for help. It’s easy; you are paying for that, too. But in the case of free apps, most of the time you are relying on friendly forums and experienced communities. Unfortunately it’s not uncommon to find awesome open source projects with zero support and forums that are nothing but cemeteries. In that case you have no one to ask.
