Chartering Checklist

Some handy things to take with you:

Foul weather jacket and trousers. Do not assume these are supplied. Some companies may hire these to you.

Deck shoes or non-slip, non-marking trainers. If you are sailing in cooler/wetter climates then yachting wellies will make a huge difference to your happiness and safety.

Handheld GPS if you have one. Virtually all charter yachts will have a fixed GPS, but a backup is handy if the electrics go down and can be used in the cockpit if there is no repeater. Spare batteries.

Personal logbook so you have a record of your cruise.

Mobile phone. This is useful to check about berth availability, book a restaurant table or for a quick chat with the charter company if there is something you don't understand.

High-factor sun cream. A hat is also highly recommended for the folically challenged.

A waterproof bag for taking stuff ashore in the dinghy can be useful.

Kitchen roll or newspaper for all sorts of mopping up operations.

Clothes pegs and a tea towel (there is usually one on board, but you never know).

You can get these details from your charter company. So I recommend you to hire a reputed charter company

Yacht Handover Checklist

The yacht handover will usually take about an hour and is important so you are familiar with the vessel before putting to sea. At least two of you should be shown the following:

The location and safe operation of all the safety equipment including:

liferaft

fire extinguisher

lifejackets

safety harnesses

flares

torches

EPIRB

Handheld VHF

first aid kit

bolt cutters

emergency tiller

Operating the following systems:

Cooker

Heating system

Heads

Engine

VHF

Anchors

Location and operation of other items:

Seacocks and emergency bungs

All the instruments, including the GPS

Charts and pilot books

All the halyards, winches, reefing lines and other sail controls

The charter company would prefer you to feel 100% confident before you take their boat out so don't be afraid to ask questions if there is anything you are not sure of or want to know more about. I always ask about the cruising area if I am not familiar with it. The charterer usually has loads of local knowledge and is delighted to share it. It can also be a good idea to ask about sail plans for different wind speeds and directions if you have not sailed that model of yacht before. As models are many like voyage 580, voyage 500, voyage 440, voyage 450 cabriolet, voyage 450 day cruiser to know more about these Power catamarans Yachts

When looking to charter a yacht you will first need to decide how large a boat you will need.

For luxury yacht manufacturer you you can visit http://www.voyagecharters.com

The two main determining factors are price and how many people will be aboard. You will need to strike a balance by chartering a yacht that has the facilities you need at the price you can afford.

If price is a major consideration, 2 couples can have a fun vacation on a 32 foot yacht. The living space below is adequate, the cockpit a little cramped and the sailing a little more bumpy in larger seas due to a rather short waterline. Similarly, if you would like to get away for a romantic cruise with your partner, then you will be looking at a smaller yacht if you want to keep the price down. Small may mean fewer extras, but not less seaworthy - 25ft yachts have crossed the Atlantic and sailed round the world.

If you are party animals and have lots of friends or if major fun and luxury are at the top of your list, then something in the 40 feet range and over is just what you need. It has a sumptuous salon with lots of walking and sitting room, and ample cockpit seating for those balmy evening sunsets. A 40ft boat can provide eight or ten berths and can be very affordable and will provide exhilarating sailing.

Since you will be living together for at least a week private space is important. Some good rules of thumb when thinking about the size of yacht to charter are:

"One couple, one head". Larger boats usually have more heads (e.g. 35 footer 1 head, 50 footer 4 heads).

Everyone should have their own bunk or 2 people per cabin.

No one should call the main salon their sleeping area. That poor person will have no privacy and be required to continually move their personal stuff out of sight.

One of the main ways to keep the cost down is to charter from a smaller company; they often offer older boats at cheaper prices. In addition you will want to ask yourself what facilities are essential. Examples of such optional items are:

hot water

fridge

cabin heating

furling headsail

spinnaker

outboard for the tender
